Food poisoning is not uncommon. More often, of course, it occurs in the summer, because due to heat, food can deteriorate faster. But in winter, it can also be encountered. At the same time, it will take some time to recover from poisoning. And nutrition plays an important role during this period – after all, not everything can be eaten. What exactly is allowed in the diet of a poisoned person, and what is not, told nutritionist Irina Mansurova.

If a person has experienced food poisoning, he will have to recover within seven to ten days – it is during this period that he will have to maintain a sparing diet. It is important to remember that if the signs of poisoning (nausea, one-time vomiting, upset stool and torsion in the abdomen) are supplemented by fever and the appearance of a rash on the body, you can’t wait, as well as treat yourself – you need to urgently contact a specialist. If vomiting becomes uncontrollable, a specialist should also be called.

What can you eat after poisoning?

If a spoiled product has affected the stomach, its mucosa will be inflamed and irritated, proteins and other useful components of the products are not normally absorbed, but come out almost immediately with loose stools and vomiting. During this period, the balance of bacteria – beneficial and pathogenic – in the intestines is disturbed.

What is possible in such a situation? So, the first thing to take care of is clean drinking water. The effects of food poisoning must be washed away. Water should be without gas, it can be used up to three liters per day.

In order not to overload the already exhausted stomach, food should be organized fractional – six to seven small portions of 150-200 grams and milliliters.

It is best to opt for pureed or liquid foods, which will be easier to digest and will not lead to fermentation, as well as increased gas formation.

Recommended products include the following:

  • crackers, which must first be soaked in tea, or biscuit cookies;
  • broth, necessarily low-fat, from poultry;
  • cereals – rice, buckwheat, oatmeal on the water will be an ideal choice, you can also use semolina;
  • boiled meat or fish, as an option, can be steamed, low-fat varieties should be chosen;
  • baked apples;
  • steam omelet or boiled eggs;
  • a decoction of chamomile, which has antiseptic properties, or sweet tea.

These products will restore the balance and normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

What is not worth eating?

Among the prohibited foods after food poisoning are the following options:

  • fatty, smoked, fried foods, this also includes salted foods, as well as potentially unhealthy foods, including fast food;
  • acidic foods are also prohibited (pomegranate, green apples, citrus fruits) – such foods increase the secretion of the stomach and intestines;
  • fruit juices;
  • pickles, smoked meats, spicy foods – sausages, herring, dishes with a generous addition of seasonings. This also includes marinades and canned food;
  • coffee;
  • alcoholic beverages, because alcohol slows down regeneration processes, and also overloads the liver and kidneys;
  • mushrooms and fresh vegetables;
  • chocolate;
  • onion and garlic.

Favorite milk and cereals on it can be included in your diet no earlier than two weeks after an episode of food poisoning. Sour-milk options are possible earlier, but it is better not in their pure form. For example, grind cottage cheese into a casserole. No artificial additives should be added to such a dish.

Nuances of nutrition in case of complications

If poisoning is accompanied by vomiting, you need to drink water, but in small sips – this measure will help to cope with nausea and vomiting. If you can’t drink at all, then you can use ice cubes and dissolve them.

If abundant fluid loss is noted, signs of dehydration become noticeable – dry mouth and skin dries up, weakness, dizziness develop, the amount of urine excreted decreases and it begins to darken, there is an increase in heart rate or breathing rate. It is necessary, without wasting time, to urgently compensate for losses, including glucose and electrolytes (potassium and sodium). In this case, it is necessary to prepare a special restorative solution – pour half a teaspoon of salt and six teaspoons of sugar per liter of water. Drink this drink in a glass. As an option that will be more reliable, you can buy a bulk product for a solution in a pharmacy – rehydrating preparations contain all the necessary trace elements in a balanced form. It is also advisable to consult a doctor.
