It’s a matter of dose. How much alcohol can you drink without harm to health | Healthy life | Health

He touched on the topic of the benefits and harms of alcohol in his telegram channel Alexander Myasnikov. The doctor emphasized that medicine and poison differ only in dose, which is also true for strong drinks. The doctor noticed that in small amounts alcohol can be helpful. “Dozens of extensive and methodologically correct studies have convincingly shown that those who regularly consume small doses of alcohol live longer and get sick less often than those who have never taken alcohol in their mouths,” emphasizes the doctor.

He also noticed that physicians find themselves in a difficult situation in which alcohol seems to be among the drinks that increase morbidity and mortality, but at the same time it can also be one that reduces both. Most often, its influence on the development of diseases of the heart and blood vessels is studied.

What to consider?

The key point is the dose. It is she who defines the fine line between good and evil, which should not be crossed.

It is also extremely important to understand that there are those categories of people for whom there is no concept of a “safe dose” – they simply cannot drink alcohol. These include:

  • women expecting a baby;
  • patients with diagnosed hepatitis, since alcohol is the strongest poison for the liver;
  • people with pancreatic pathologies;
  • suffering from alcohol dependence, even when it is in the past.

The concept of low dose

Butchers notes that it is worth focusing on the concept of “one standard” – about 14 grams of pure alcohol per day. In terms of the usual drinks, this is:

  • a glass of strong drinks – vodka, cognac, rum, whiskey (45 ml);
  • a glass of wine (150 ml);
  • glass or mug of beer (300 ml).

But there is a nuance, Myasnikov says. So, for example, 8% of people have a genetic feature – the presence of a special enzyme. It is not difficult to distinguish them – after using even a small dose, their face begins to turn red and a feeling of heat appears. Even a small amount of alcohol they have can increase the risk of cardiovascular pathologies. This enzyme leads to the development of oxidative stress and causes inflammation and vascular damage.
